왕곡마을 초가 골목
Tucked into a fold of hills behind Songjiho Lagoon in Goseong, near Korea's northeastern border, Wanggok Village has held on to something rare: an entire neighborhood of thatched-roof homes lining unpaved earthen lanes. The houses here follow a northern plan, with kitchen and living rooms joined under one roof against long cold winters, and chimneys rising apart from the thatch. This painting follows the lane where it bends between low walls, empty of people, the packed soil taking on the muted color of the roof shadows above.
고성 왕곡마을은 송지호 뒤편 산자락에 안겨 있어 바닷바람이 곧장 닿지 않는다. 그림은 초가 이엉을 새로 얹은 지붕들이 낮게 이어지고, 그 사이로 흙길이 완만하게 휘어 들어가는 지점을 담았다. 강원 북부 특유의 ㄱ자 겹집 구조와 마당을 감싼 담장이 골목의 폭을 좁혀 놓았고, 굴뚝이 지붕 밖으로 따로 솟은 모습도 그대로 남겼다. 인적 없는 시간, 흙바닥이 지붕 그림자를 받아 색을 한 단계 낮춘다.
Why this subject
관동 지방의 살림집이 원래 어떤 모양이었는지를 마을 단위로 보여주는 곳은 이제 많지 않다. 초가라는 재료가 주는 낡음이 아니라, 추위를 막기 위해 방과 부엌을 한 몸으로 붙인 집의 논리를 골목에서 읽어보고 싶었다. 그래서 집 한 채가 아니라 집들이 이어지며 만드는 길의 굽이를 화면 중심에 두었다.
On the style
부드러운 수채 번짐은 이엉의 결을 한 올씩 세지 않으면서도 짚이 머금은 부피감을 남기는 데 알맞다. 지붕 마루선과 담장의 각도는 건축적으로 정확히 잡아두어, 번진 표면 아래에서 집의 구조가 흐트러지지 않는다. 채도를 낮춘 따뜻한 색조가 짚의 누런 기와 다져진 흙길의 붉은 기를 같은 온도로 묶고, 확산된 빛은 처마 밑 그늘을 검게 떨어뜨리지 않아 골목이 끝까지 열려 보인다.
